Faded and Blurred Website / Blog

While checking my Facebook page tonight I came across the Faded and Blurred website/blog.  Faded and Blurred is a photography site that focues on vision and the image rather than the equipment.  In short it's a site packet full of information including interviews with well-know photograhers, videos, tutorials, a blog, a forum and much more.

In the Photographer Spotlight section there is a great article on Steve McCurry. If you don't recognize his name, you will recognize his photograph from National Geographic of the Afgan Girl.  It's probably one of the best and most well known photographs ever taken.  A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to see a real print of it and it's even better in person than you can image.  One little know fact about Steve McCurry is that when Kodak quit making Kodachrome a couple of year ago, they gave the very last roll made to Steve.
I think this will be one of the few websites and blogs that I visit on a daily basis. It's well worth sending some time checking it out.

Creative Live On-Line Seminar with David duChemin

Earlier today, I received an email about an on-line seminar with David duChemin being offered by Creative Live.  If you are not familiar with David, he is a world and humanitarian photographer as well as being a best-selling author on photography, and leader of workshops world-wide. He has numerous hard copy and e-books on making a living with photography, finding your vision, Adobe Lightroom. and many other great topics.

The on-line seminar, which focuses using photography to express your vision, being offered by Creative Live is a series of prerecorded videos.  The on-line course is currently being offer for $129 till December 31, 2010.  If  you go to http://creativelive.com/courses/david_duchemin, there is a video that previews the course.  Based on the agenda shown on the site and the video it looks like it is well worth the $129.

If you get a chance check out this class as well as David's books, blog, and website. He does amazing work.

Smart Ad Campaign for Diesel

It seems like really good advertising that combines smart content and great photos are hard to find. Anomaly Agency, out of New York and London, has created a series of ads for the clothing company Diesel and they are really funny.  This is a campaign that looks like it would have been fun to work on.  I don't know if they won an awards for it but if they didn't, they should have.

More print ad and videos for this campaign can be seen at Advertolog.com.  Check them out and think they will make you smile.  They made me smile.

Christa Meola Blog

Earlier today when I was checking my Facebook page, I noticed a posting from Kim Weston. He and Christa Meola are doing a seminar at his Wildcat Studio in Carmel, CA on October 15-17, 2010.  In the posting it gave a link to Christa's blog.

Christa has one of the best photography blogs I have seen. According to her blog, she calls herself a "lifestyle photograhper specialzing in women and families".  Her work is fantastic.

My guess is that the seminar being put on my Kim and Christa will sell out.  When I check earlier today there were only 4 spots left.  It should be a great seminar and experience to work with these two outstanding photographers.

The September Issue - DVD

I just finished watching "The September Issue" on DVD.  It is a documentary about the making of the September 2007 issue of Vogue Magazine.  It is a good look at the behind the scenes of the making of an issue of a fashion magazine. It has some good excerpts of some of the top industry photographers at work.  If you are interested in fashion and photography, the DVD is worth taking a look at.

Bunch of new stuff in the side bar

Over the weekend, I posted a bunch of new stuff to the side bars of this blog,  I added a new section called Video of the Week  in which I am planning on posting a new video each week that I found on the web. Thus the name "Video of the Week". Most of the time the video will deal with photography but sometimes it might not, so  check back every week to see what's new. Finally I also changed the name of the Longmont Photo Group Bookstore to just The Bookstore.
Below is a quick reference to the new information but also feel free to explore and see if I missed anything.

V magazine is about fashion, art, music, film, architecture, culture, and everything in between. It is a great magazine that varies from month-to-month and year-to-year. The current issue, #63, focuses on Size, showing how women of all size are beautiful. With all the recent discussion concerning the size of models, this issue is very relevant.

Seth Godin Blog Post of January 18, 2010 - Unrealized Projects

If you don't know who Seth Godin is and you are interested in business and marketing then you should.  He is the author of probably the most popular marketing blog in the world and is the author of 12 bestselling marketing books that have been translated into 33 languages.  He is a marketing genius, very entertaining, and his insight and advice really makes you  think. It's good advice to follow.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post called "Fear and Photography" and in it I mentioned that Fear was one reason by we don't complete projects that we sometimes have in mind. When I say "We" I mean myself and other photographers as a whole and other than myself no one specific. When I received this email the other day I started thinking that Seth Godin really hit the nail on the head with this post on why we need to put fear aside and as he says "ship".

Here is the Seth Godin post of January 18, 2010, Unrealized Projects in its entirety:
When I was at MOMA last week, I saw a list of director and artist Tim Burton's projects. Here's the guy who's responsible for some of the most breathtaking movies of his generation, and the real surprise is this: almost every year over the last thirty, he worked on one or more exciting projects that were never green lighted and produced. Every year, he spent an enormous amount of time on failed projects.
A few: Catwoman, Conversations With Vincent, Dinosaurs Attack!, The Fall of the House of Usher, Geek Love, Go Baby Go, Hawkline Monster, Lost in Oz, Mai the Psychic Girl, Mary Reilly, Superman Lives, X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes.
One key element of a successful artist: ship. Get it out the door. Make things happen.
The other: fail. Fail often. Dream big and don't make it. Not every time, anyway.
Tim got his ideas out the door, to the people who decided what to do with them. And more often than not, they shot down his ideas. That's okay. He shipped.
Next!

I would suggest that if you are not already a subscriber to his daily blog posting emails that you should go and sign up for them right now.  On the upper left hand side of his blog is the box where you put your email address so can subscribe. It will be we'll worth you time to read them daily.

California Sunbounce- The Gage video, Greg Gorman, and the latest Canon - Inside, The Story Behind The Photograph Ad - Part 1

I am always going out on the internet and looking for interesting photography videos. As I wrote in a posting a couple of weeks ago, California Sunbounce has a great selection on videos on their website that shows you how  famous photographers use their products.

I was in my local Borders Bookstore over the weekend and notice the latest  Canon, Inside: The Story Behind The Shot ad, featuring model Dominique Sharp, in the back of the January 2010 Issue of Photo District News. The ad was shot by Greg Gorman and the shooting of the photograph used in the ad, was featured in the video for the California Sunbounce-The Gage. It is always interesting, to me, to see how other photographers work and the equipment they use.

Below is the 1st of the 2 videos showing how to setup the California Sunbounce-The Gage and how Greg Gorman used it to create the photograph in the latest Canon Inside:The Story Behind The Shot, ad. The 2nd part of the video will be in the next post.

Fear and Photography

I recently watched the movie "Strictly Ballroom", a great quirky Australian movie by Baz Luhmann, on DVD. There is a great line in the movie which is repeated a couple of times that goes " A life lived in fear is a life half lived".

As photographers we sometimes use fear to prevent us from taking photographs. It may be the fear of approaching someone, the fear that the picture won't come out as we envision it or any number of other reasons. The bottom line is that we need to not worry about making the perfect picture every time and we just go out and shoot. The more we shoot the better odds we are going to have of getting the picture(s) we envision.

One of my goals for 2010 is not to let fear interfere with my photography.

Here are some addition quotes concerning fear and failure:
"The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure." - Sven Goran Eriksson
"Fear of failure must never be a reason not to try something." - Frederick Smith
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." - Franklin Roosevelt
